Texas: Home Of The 80 MPH Highway

CBS News: "A total of 521 miles of highway in sparsely populated areas of Texas are the only stretches of road in America where you can legally drive 80 miles per hour."

Texas still thinks it has unlimited supplies of the black gold. I have travelled some of those stretches. Have a blow out and get injured, and you could wait an hour or more for emergency services in the right spots at the right time of day. That's plenty of time to bleed to death first. But, what is really happening is that Texas police can't control speeders, and the wealthy ranchers out there have political clout. Voila! A Texas autobahn where speeds in reality exceed 120 mph by some. -- David R. Remer, PoliWatch.Org.
