Boston Globe: Politics News - Wait a minute. Who or what, exactly, is the Democratic Party? That's a good question, and an important one. The answer from the Worcester convention is that a few hundred members of the Democratic State Committee, and a few thousand delegates to the convention, claim the right to be super-Democrats, able to dictate to the several hundred thousand voters who will cast Democratic ballots in September whom they may or may not nominate.
ABC News: Politics: "Voters in Eight States Go to the Polls in Contest Many See As Bellwether for Fall Election"
Now if Democrats were smart, they would register as Republicans and vote for the Republican challenger instead of the Republican incumbent, where Democrats don't have a chance of winning due to gerrymandering. And vice versa, of course. What's good for the goose, should be good for the gander, eh? The beauty of this strategy is, incumbents will suffer like never before in modern times, and we, the people, might just get politicians who fear the voters again. -- David R. Remer, PoliWatch.Org.
AP Politics: "CEDAR RAPIDS, Iowa (AP) -- Republican Sen. John McCain, an early front-runner in the 2008 sweepstakes, told Iowa audiences recently that he is opposed to all farm subsidies, including special deals for ethanol production.
That is not exactly what people are used to hearing from candidates, but it has not stopped the Arizona lawmaker from collecting some important early backing."
Boston Globe: Politics News - Only 14 of the [Mass.] Senate's 40 seats, and only 58 of the 160 seats in the House, are being contested this year, raising the question of where democracy has gone.
If you think of it, to "elect" means to choose. If there's no choice, how can there be an election? And if there's no true election, where's the democracy?
Good Points! -- David R. Remer, PoliWatch.Org.

ABC News: Politics: "GOP Pins Hopes on Black Candidates Like Michael Steele in Maryland, Lynn Swann in Pennsylvania"
Reuters: Top News: "NEW ORLEANS (Reuters) - Ray Nagin narrowly won a second term as mayor of New Orleans on Saturday with support from both black and white voters and immediately began mending fences with the federal and state governments to hasten the devastated city's recovery.
For all his irrational and over the top responses to Katrina, it appears the voters forgave his "losing it" temporarily. Recognizing the faults at the state and federal level were beyond his control, the majority of voters are willing to give him another chance, rather than suffer a new comer taking advantage of Katrina for personal gain. Nagin inherited Katrina on his watch, now it is up to Nagin to make good on rebuilding, if the state and feds will work toward the same ends. -- David R. Remer, PoliWatch.Org.
